Westview's Frisbee Team is Runner-up Champion in 11-Team Tournament

Article By Dedicated Teacher and Coach Cindy Truong

At the annual Westview Ultimate Fundraiser Tournament, 11 schools from all over the GTA region battled it out to claim the championship title. They were met with sunshine and clear skies however, the gusty wind conditions posed as a challenge for many. Westview’s team came out with wins against CW Jeffreys and Earl Haig, tough opponents who are also competing for the North Regional title. Those wins allowed us to move forward to compete in the final match-up against a talented and athletic North Toronto team. Westview’s perseverance and grit, along with impressive performances from Tina Le and Demar Holness, aided the team’s success throughout the tournament, however they were not able to come away with the championship. North Toronto took home this year’s championship trophy. Westview finished with runner-up position.

Major Steps in History of Ultimate Frisbee.

In 1968 Joel Silver introduced his idea of Ultimate Frisbee to the Columbia High School student council in Maplewood New Jersey, USA. The next year, the first game was played between two groups of students. In 1969 the team formed at the school played in a parking lot! The only lines that existed were the goal lines, usually marked by telephone poles or piles of the players' coats.
The first college ultimate game was played between Rutgers and Princeton on November 6, 1972. Rutgers won the game 29-27. The two universities had played the first intercollegiate football game on the same ground exactly 103 years earlier.
